All my friends and family know I have a mild obsession with tassels. It started when I was 7 and was given a Jean jacket with a picture of Pocahontas on the back, and brown tassels hanging from the sleeves. Ever since that jacket I have fallen in love with all things to do with tassels hanging off it; clothes, purses, jewellery, home décor.. I mean the list can go on.
I have been looking for a tassel skirt for awhile, but couldn't seem to find one that I liked, so I thought why not do one myself? I really like the way it turned out and cant wait too try my next one using leather instead of thick suede.
Keep scrolling for instructions for the DIY.
What you need:
- Long skirt - longer the better (mine was $5 from Value Village)
- Scissors
- Sewing machine (or by hand it will just take more time)
1) Lay the skirt flat on the floor. Measure how long you want the skirt to be and make a mark. Add three inches to your mark and then cut the excess material off.
2) Take your main piece and start cutting the tassels in even widths along the bottom. Use the mark you made on your skirt as a indicator on how high you should cut the tassels.
3) Take your excess material and cut it so that one half is smaller then the other. Begin again by cutting tassels along the bottom of both pieces of material leaving one inch at the top.
4) Take the longer piece of material and pin it 2/3 of the way up on your main piece. Pin the fabric in place and then sew along the top one inch.
5) Take your smaller piece and pin the tassels to the top of your skirt. Pin the fabric and sew in place.
6) Ta da! You very own tassel skirt!
I hope you all like it and I cant wait too finish my next one and show you soon! If you have any questions on how to do this DIY feel free to email me and I would be happy to help!
Cheers =)

This is cool! I have never seen this before? Is it popular where you live? How do you make sure the strings don't look tacky? Do they poke out? Every time I try on a tassle skirt I look like a pumpkin... >.<
